Looking uncannily like a young Mick Jagger, Jake Bugg is the ideal poster boy for Hedi Slimane’s latest black-and-white shoot for Saint Laurent. Bugg is the first Brit and the youngest member of the campaign's impressive rock-'n'-roll lineup, which includes Chuck Berry, Courtney Love, BB King, Kim Gordon, Marilyn Manson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Daft Punk. The series captures the musicians wearing the fabled French brand in their own insouciant way. For the young British singer-songwriter, that means a classic L01 motorcycle jacket paired with his guitar and a pout to rival Mick’s.
Slimane has long had a loud relationship with the music industry, both as a photographer and a designer. During his time at Saint Laurent in '90s, he designed concert costumes. And, later, at Dior, he made stagewear for David Bowie and Franz Ferdinand. So, it came as no surprise when Slimane announced Beck and Christopher Owens would be the new faces of Saint Laurent when he returned to the label in 2012.
But, the musical collaborations don’t stop on the page. The designer has taken the label’s musical heritage one step further, commissioning original soundtracks from Daft Punk, Ty Segall, and The Oh Sees for Saint Laurent fashion shows. Which leads us to wonder who and what are next? Will models be walking down the catwalk to an acoustic performance by Jake Bugg? Or, will it be Bugg strutting his stuff on the runway? (Grazia)
