The 15 Best Beauty Looks From Last Night's Gala

Punk rock and the modern-day fashion world: These two polar opposites came together at last night's Met Ball with results that were equal parts awkward and awesome. While many predictably (and disappointingly) played it safe, there were plenty of stars who took some major beauty risks and totally blew our minds.
From Rooney Mara's gothic purple lipstick and Elle Fanning's Technicolor shadow slashes to January Jones' AH-mazing snake braid, here are our picks for the prettiest punks at last night's Met Ball.

Rooney Mara
To be fair, Rooney had a bit of a head start, what with playing punk hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. But, we still have to give her major props for this pairing of a blackened-plum lip with a lacquered, sculptural updo.

Nicole Richie
This is what we'd like to think our Troll dolls would look like if they ever got invited to the Met Ball — and we mean that as the highest of compliments. In a sea of tame and timid beauty, Nicole went balls to the wall and it paid off, big time. Her shock of white hair and those on-point plum lips gave her a refined, elegant look, but with that necessary twist that embraced the theme of the night. This is the look we know we're not going to be able to stop talking about for the next week.

Cara Delevingne
This is quite possibly the most perfect balance of hard and soft that we've ever seen. Cara Delevingne's greasy, smoked-out eye, deep side part, and messy texture walk the line of glamour girl and don't-mess-with-me babe.

Ginnifer Goodwin
In a testament to the transformative powers of pomade and black eyeliner, Ginnifer Goodwin absolutely nailed it with this tough, androgynous look. Kudos to her makeup artist, Mai Quynh (working with Laura Mercier) for the precision of that brow and shadow combo.

Elle Fanning
Despite her messy slashes of Technicolor shadow and disheveled, crimped 'do, Elle Fanning still managed to look ethereal and serene. Impressive.

Alicia Keys
Rocking a faux undercut, some crimson streaks, and molten metal eyeshadow, Alicia Keys definitely brought her Met Ball A-game.

January Jones
Citing Siouxsie Sioux as her influence, the Mad Men star let her edgy side out to play last night with a parted, serpentine braid, contoured cheekbones, and super-graphic liner. This is a heretofore unknown badass side of January that we're dying to see more of.

Karen Elson
Her look may have seemed simple, with minimalist hair and makeup, but Karen Elson really committed to the theme with a faux nose ring — something she told William Norwich that she liked so much, she might even do it for real.

Kristen Stewart
K.Stew had this one in the bag: She's played musical icon Joan Jett, plus her lack of interest in the whole red-carpet circus gives her the pre-requisite blasé attitude required to successfully pull off punk. We're digging the wash of red shadow (look how amazing it makes her eyes look) and that swoopy pompadour.

Jennifer Lopez
J.Lo with a mohawk? Yup, now we've seen everything.

Anja Rubik
Anja Rubik's volumized, swept-back hairstyle and super-clean and lengthened cat-eye were giving us major flashbacks to Debbie Harry's Blondie heyday.

Madonna
Part Bettie Page and part dominatrix, Madonna's blunt, raven bob helped her not only embrace the theme, but look damn fine doing it. Seriousy, is she aging backward?

Anne Hathaway
Because chopping off all her hair on camera wasn't enough of a change for Anne Hathaway, she decided to pop up on the punk red carpet with a spankin' new bleached-blonde 'do. We loved the sleek sides and the lifted roots, not to mention the cool contrast between her dark brows and those newly flaxen follicles.

Amand Seyfried
Maybe we missed the memo that the updo of the night would be the sculptural, elongated, "alien head" 'do, but clearly Amanda Seyfried not only got it, but took copious notes. Her thick, black liner and sectioned-off braid were the perfect complements to her backless Givenchy.

Kelly Osbourne
We're not sure where we expected Kelly Osbourne to go with this theme, but it wasn't here. She looks so elegant and glamorous with her metallic eye makeup and thick ballerina bun. Way to keep us guessing, Kelly.
