Just as the song says, the sun has got its hat on and we’re shouting hip hooray. After months of lukewarm weather, the British sunshine finally decided to emerge this month, leaving many of us overjoyed (and the majority of us overheated). Over the past few weeks, tropical temperatures have reigned supreme across the country, seeing many of us scarper off to the seaside, sunbathe in local parks and try to keep cool with the help of blow-up paddling pools.
However, amongst all the excitement, one thing that has become very clear is our collective lack of head protection. While most of us are aware of the need for SPF, beyond slathering on the sunscreen many of us do little else to protect our bodies from the sun’s harmful rays. While we might think about packing a wide-brimmed hat for a trip to the Italian Riveria, it seems that many of us forget to don headwear when it comes to enjoying a sunny day out at home.
One reason for this may be our lack of faith in the sun staying out for more than five minutes, but even when skies go cloudy, it's still important to protect your head. Though it might often seem like the sun is nowhere to be found on rainy days, over 80% of UVA rays still penetrate through the clouds, meaning donning a hat is always a sensible option no matter what the forecast is.
Thankfully, the new selection of sun hats on offer this summer are here to provide top-level sun protection, while still looking chic. From Ganni’s multicoloured seersucker designs to Lack Of Color’s 60’s inspired floral offerings, the time to shop for trendy headwear is now.
