This Is Our Jam: Angel Olsen, “Sweet Dreams”

ley-olsen
Spaghetti Western guitars, warbling high notes, and a looming sense of dread pervades singer/songwriter Angel Olsen's gorgeous new track "Sweet Dreams." While the folksy artist had previously focused on quiet, restrained arrangements, "Sweet Dreams" is big and dramatic in a way that we haven't heard until now. While comparisons to artists like Nancy Sinatra and Roy Orbison are apt, her falsetto especially evokes Chris Isaak's classic "Wicked Game" as she unfurls across similarly wind-swept wastelands. Last year's Half Way Home LP was a quiet triumph for Olsen, but "Sweet Dreams" portends a more impassioned artist fully in command of her arresting voice.
