Life Was Very Different When The Younger Cast First Joined The Book World Dramedy

They say all good things must come to an end, which is what makes the seventh and final season of Younger all the more bittersweet. On the one hand, it makes sense for Liza Miller’s (Sutton Foster) journey in the wonderful world of publishing to be brought to a close. (For starters, her secret is very much out of the bag.) However, looking back at the Younger cast now and when they first started on the show, it’s natural to feel just a little bummed knowing that their days of playing these memorable characters are over.

Series creator Darren Star and Foster confirmed Younger’s cancelation back in February while promising fans a satisfying conclusion. "We're looking forward to taking fans on one last roller-coaster ride this season," Star teased in a promo video, while Foster added, "What a ride it'll be. We're bringing all the emotion and all the laughs and all the drama that define Younger, and have made it the success that it is."

That success has only continued to grow since the series first premiered on TV Land back in 2015, which is in large part thanks to the actors who gave us characters worth rooting for. Yet this wasn’t necessarily the first hit project these stars have been attached to — nor will it be the last. So in honor of Younger’s highly anticipated season 7 premiere, let’s take a look back at everything the cast had accomplished prior to the series and what they have lined up going forward.

Younger season 7 will drop weekly episodes on Hulu and Paramount+ starting April 15.

Sutton Foster Before Liza Miller

Prior to Younger, Foster was best known for her work on Broadway, starring in classics such as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes, both of which earned her two Tony awards. As for TV credits, the only lead role Foster held on the small screen prior to Younger was during her time playing Michelle Simms on Freeform’s all-too-brief series Bunheads.

These days, Foster has been keeping herself fairly busy. In 2020, she nabbed a pivotal guest-starring role on the ABC drama A Million Little Things where she played Chloe, Eric’s (Jason Ritter) dead fiancée. Meanwhile, Foster is also slated to star as Marian Paroo in an upcoming Broadway revival of The Music Man, opposite Hugh Jackman’s Harold Hill. The production was delayed due to COVID-19, though previews are scheduled to start in December 2021 and the musical will officially open on Feb. 10, 2022.

Nico Tortorella Before Josh

Tortorella’s most notable small screen work prior to Younger occurred in 2013 when they starred in Fox’s The Following as Jacob Wells. They also portrayed real-life convicted killer Lyle Menendez in the 2017 TV movie Menendez: Blood Brothers.

Adding to their growing resume of dark dramas, Tortorella now stars in AMC’s new Walking Dead spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond as Felix Carlucci. Production for season 2 is already underway and will also serve as the show’s final season.

Peter Hermann Before Charles Brooks

Hermann has appeared on several prominent TV shows throughout the years, including Sex and the City, 30 Rock, The Good Wife, and White Collar. He’s also served as a recurring character on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which is where he initially met his wife, Mariska Hargitay — the one and only Olivia Benson.

When he’s not busy posing in photos with Hargitay on Instagram, Hermann can also be spotted in the recurring role of Jack Boyle on CBS’ Blue Bloods. In fact, his character will be making an appearance during the April 16 episode, “Happy Endings.”

Hilary Duff Before Kelsey Peters

There’s no denying that Duff’s IMDb page is both extensive and impressive. However, it was her portrayal of Lizzie McGuire in 2001 that truly launched her career (and fame) into overdrive, which led to her starring in several other noteworthy projects, including A Cinderella Story to Cheaper By the Dozen and Raise Your Voice. She also went on to appear in several episodes of Gossip Girl as Dan Humphrey’s love interest, Olivia Burke, in 2009.

The Lizzie McGuire reboot may no longer be in the works at Disney+ (boo!), but that isn’t the only intriguing project Duff is being associated with. As per The Hollywood Reporter, ViacomCBS is interested in developing a Younger spinoff series centered around Duff’s character, Kelsey Peters. If this pans out, then maybe fans won’t be saying goodbye to Younger after all. At least not entirely.

Miriam Shor Before Diana Trout

Before she was rocking extravagant statement necklaces on Younger, Shor appeared in numerous small screen roles on GCB, The Good Wife, The Americans, and even Broad City. That said, she may be best recognized for her incredible performance as Yitzak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, both on Broadway and in the 2001 film adaptation.

Most recently, Shor appeared briefly in an episode of the 2020 miniseries Mrs. America as Natalie Gittelson. Additionally, she portrayed Kylie Chandler’s wife in George Clooney’s latest film, The Midnight Sky.

Molly Bernard Before Lauren Heller

Bernard hadn’t been cast in too many projects during her early and pre-Younger days, but the projects she did book were memorable. Bernard played a young version of Judith Light’s Shelly on Transparent, portrayed Angie Sullivan on Alpha House, and even nabbed a brief cameo in The Intern in which she shared a scene with Robert De Niro.

Younger may be coming to a close, but fans of NBC’s Chicago Med know that Bernard’s character, Elsa Curry has popped up numerous times on the drama series, even as recently as 2020. Perhaps this recurring role will morph into a more permanent position. Then again, given how close Lauren is to Kelsey, it would make sense for her to also appear on the potential Younger spinoff.

Debi Mazar Before Maggie Amato

Before playing Liza’s BFF on Younger, Mazar’s interests skewed to more legal dramas, starring in both Civil Wars and L.A. Law. She also portrayed press agent Shauna Roberts in Entourage and who could ever forget her brief but memorable cameo on Friends?

Mazar continues to stay busy, having booked special appearances on shows like Power, Katy Keene, and At Home with Amy Sedaris in 2020.

Charles Michael Davis Before Zane Anders

Fine, so technically Davis wasn’t part of the original cast since Zane didn’t appear on Younger until season 4, but he’s become such an integral character it would feel wrong not to include him. Davis has racked up a very impressive resume throughout the years, particularly on the small screen with recurring roles on Grey’s Anatomy, Chicago P.D., and For The People. However, Davis is probably best known for his portrayal of the immortal and highly charming vampire Marcel Gerard on The Originals.

These days, Davis stars as Special Agent Quentin Carter on NCIS: New Orleans, which is currently in its seventh and final season. But hey, depending upon how things work out between Zane and Kelsey, he could also serve as part of that Younger spinoff. Only time will tell.
