Every Voice You’ll Hear In Netflix’s Over The Moon

When you sit down to watch Over the Moon on Netflix, a new animated musical about a young girl who builds a rocket ship in hopes of meeting a legendary lunar princess, don't be surprised if some of the voices sound a little familiar. The all-Asian cast of Over the Moon includes a handful of newcomers, but mostly very famous and recognizable names. All your faves are here for this heartwarming tale.

For Broadway superfans missing out while theatres are still shut down worldwide, this movie is also an unexpected gathering of theatre talent that should definitely give you a show tunes fix this fall. Not only are there multiple stage stars lending their voices to the characters and songs, but one of Over The Moon’s three composers is Helen Park, who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the cult musical KPOP that, fingers crossed, is headed to the Great White Way very very soon. For the more casual Broadway fan, she's definitely one to watch.

From the two younger performers to the old veterans and the singers and comedians in between, here are the members of the Over the Moon cast, who they play, and how you know them.

Cathy Ang is the voice of Fei Fei

Ang is a relative newcomer, unless you spotted her in an episode of Ramy on Hulu — or unless you’re particularly hip and tuned in to the theatre scene, of course. She is one of the stars of the aforementioned KPOP and has appeared in other musicals including We Are The Tigers and Riot Antigone off-Broadway as well as Maybe Happy Ending in Atlanta.

Phillipa Soo is the voice of Chang'e

You know Soo as Eliza in Hamilton, and her musical theatre credits also include the title role in Amelié on Broadway and Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 off-Broadway at Ars Nova. In Over The Moon she plays the Moon Goddess that our hero Fei Fei is trying to visit.

Ken Jeong is the voice of Gobi

Gobi is the animated space puppy in Over the Moon. And the voice behind the pup, Jeong, is best known for making purposefully wrong guesses on The Masked Singer for comedic effect, but the actor’s many other claims to fame include Community, The Hangover, Crazy Rich Asians, and Dr. Ken.

John Cho is the voice of Ba Ba

The star of Selfie, Star Trek, and one half of Harold and Kumar has seamlessly transitioned into dad roles, it seems. As Fei Fei’s father in Over the Moon, Cho is at least thankfully less stressed out than he was when he played a dad in Searching.

Ruthie Ann Miles is the voice of Mother

Fei Fei’s mother is played by this Broadway star, who won a Tony for her role as Lady Thiang in the 2015 revival of The King and I. You may also know her as Young Hee Seong on The Americans or as Sherri in All Rise on CBS.

Margaret Cho is the voice of Auntie Ling

The stand-up comedian is so famous that it’s hard to pinpoint what most people “know” her from. But it is important to note that she competed on The Masked Singer and Jeong will never live down the fact that he didn’t identify her after they worked together on his own sitcom. They've reunited again in Over the Moon, and I'm hoping this time, Jeong is able to recognize her voice.

Sandra Oh is the voice of Mrs. Zhong

Killing Eve really sparked a Sandra Oh-issance, and we couldn’t be happier for the former Grey’s Anatomy star that it’s all happening. Recently, Oh did voice work as Castaspella in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Kimiko Glenn is the voice of Auntie Mei

The Orange Is the New Black actor sang on Broadway as Dawn in Sara Bareilles’ Waitress, off-Broadway in Love’s Labor’s Lost with the Public Theatre, and played Thea in the first national tour of Spring Awakening. She also voiced Peni Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Robert G Chiu is the voice of Chin

The little boy who accompanies Fei Fei on her rocket ship adventure, aka Mrs. Zhong's son, is played by this young actor. This is his first feature film role!
