Steal The Extra-Sexy Tom Ford Makeup Look (With Tips From Tom!)

Although combining bold eyes, cheeks, and lips is usually a no-no, with the launch of Tom Ford's full beauty line late last year — and with it, those over-the-top sexy ads — we're sort of inclined to give the retro-sexpot look a go. Of course, we'd like to do it without looking like a total '80s train wreck when it's all said and done. And that's where the newly unveiled Tom Ford Beauty makeup counter at Neiman Marcus comes in. We hit the new shop-in-shop of sorts, armed with our real-girl model, Becca Blanco of Ruby Press, to get a step-by-step tutorial in extra-provocative makeup. Click through to get the low down on how to create the throwback look for yourself, with tips from Mr. Tom Ford himself (!), plus a splurge vs. steal guide to the key products involved.

The Inspiration: "The collection gives you layers of possibilities," Tom Ford tells us of his beauty line. "You really can go out in the world with just your brows done, some concealer, moisturizer, and something clear on your lips. Or you can do the eye liner, you can add the smoky color, you can put the cheeks on, put the lips on. The look you create is determined by how much you want at that moment in time."

Step 1: Start with a fresh face: a luminizing moisturizer, a buildable foundation that doubles as concealer where needed, and a one-shade-brightens-all powder are the only requirements for a glowing canvas.

Products: Tom Ford Beauty Traceless Foundation Stick, $78, and Tom Ford Beauty Illuminating Powder Transluscent, $75, both available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900.

Step 2: Done correctly, contouring has cheekbone-chiseling powers. With a deft hand and a dual-shade bronze/highlighter compact, blend and sculpt for a subtle effect.

Products: Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate, $75, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900. Or try this steal: Sephora Collection Sculpting Disk, $24, available at Sephora.

Step 3: A well-groomed brow frames the face, and lifts the eyes. Using a pencil the same shade as your brows, draw a single line in along your desired arch, then use a stiff-bristled brush to distribute color throughout.

Product: Tom Ford Beauty Brow Sculptor in Espresso, $42, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900.

Step 4: You don't always have to use each color in an eyeshadow quad palette. For the look shown here, create a lash-line-to-brow-bone base in the lightest shade. Then fill from your lash-line to your crease with the second-lightest shade. Wing the outer corner of your eye with the second-darkest shade for major depth.

Products: Tom Ford Beauty Eye Color Quad in Titanium Smoke, $75, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900. Or try this steal: Rimmel Glam Eyes Quad Eyeshadow Palette in Beauty Spells, $4.06, available at Drugstore.com.

Step 5: Forget those newfangled mascaras and their outlandish claims. A water-resistant gel formula with a basic brush does the job just fine. Apply two careful coats. Let 'em dry. It's not rocket science, people.

Product: Tom Ford Beauty Extreme Mascara in Raven, $42, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900.

Step 6: The lip liner/lipstick combo is instantly aging, so skip it and use a well-formulated color applied with a brush instead. Outline the shape of your lips with the tip of the brush, then fill it all in using the side of the bristles for a perfect pout.

Products: Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color in Crimson Noir, $48, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900. Or try this steal: Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Cherry Ice, $8.99, available at Drugstore.com.

Step 7: The trick with blush when wearing a full face of makeup is to apply it last so you don't overdo it. Think of it more as the final accent on an already strong, sophisticated statement.

Product: Tom Ford Beauty Cheek Color in Flush, $55, available at Neiman Marcus, 150 Stockton Street (between Geary and O'Farrell streets); 415-362-3900.

The Final Look: Once Becca's bombshell transformation was complete, we couldn't help but feel bummed she had to head back to the office, rather than some Studio 54-esque fabulousness. Va-va-voom!
