Purity Ring
’s “Ungirthed” is an off-kilter pop gem that is also deceptively complex. The song is constructed with the capricious clatter of clipped vocals and snare taps usually found in the music of darker acts like Salem or Burial. However unlike those gloomy brooders, there is a certain...well, purity to Megan James’ voice that evokes a blithe sense of discovery. If there is an act who Purity Ring do most resemble, it’s Björk, who employed similar vocal acrobatics on her record, Medulla. Yet all these comparisons seem superfluous when“Ungirthed” is so infectiously light all on its own.
