Spoiler Alert: Why Does NYC’s Smelliest Block Stink So Bad?

If you've ever been on a post-boozy brunch LES crawl and inadvertently ambled on Broome Street between Allen and Eldridge street, we know your nose is still reeling from the truly gnarly smell, emitting, it seems, from the block's pavement itself. It's so, so bad that New York magazine went on a full-fledged investigative mission to discover the cause of the murderous miasma (seriously, they went real Sherlock Holmes on us and brought down the curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at the Museum of Arts and Design to try and get to the bottom of it). And though New York couldn't quite nail the odor's source, the trusty
Village Voice
did their own sleuthing and determined it's from "chicken, prepared, sitting in boxes, in the heat." We dare you to walk down that block again, mimosa or not.
