First Day Of High-School Outfits For Any Dress Code

As a substantial number of our readers are in high school themselves (hi, guys!), we asked Emma, blogger of The Emma Edition and a connoisseur of all things teenager-y (she’s 16!), to educate us on fashion as relevant to high-schoolers and beyond.
We all get the back-to-school jitters—getting new class schedules, navigating the classrooms, not to mention all the pressures involved with making good first impressions on our new classmates, teachers, and potential friends. But there’s always something electrifying about it, too. It’s not too much time for most of us that school will finally open its doors to the student body, meaning it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to wear. Whichever end of the style spectrum your school subscribes to (uniforms or otherwise), these outfits will combat any of your first-day sartorial struggles.

If Your School Is “Anything Goes"—Without a dress code, you can essentially make whatever statement you want, like wearing this “Total Hate” shirt to ward off your haters. However, even if your school is pretty lenient when it comes to fearless fashion, you should keep in mind that you’re still in class.
Brandy & Melville Striped Backpack, $60, available at Revolve Clothing; Jeffrey Campbell Green Suede Areas Boots, $180, available at Bonadrag; Unif Total Hate Shirt, $62, available at Unif; Pegleg Polka Dot Denim, $130, available at Pegleg NYC.

If You Have A Dress Code—Depending on your school’s dress code, you may not be permitted to wear things like heeled boots, anything short, or in some cases, jeans. But in abiding by the dress code, you can still get your peers’ attention and feel good about what you’re wearing, too. Tip: Try rocking a cute pair of ankle booties with a peek-a-boo print sock for a unique statement!
Madewell The Suede Sandstorm Boot, $178, available at Madewell; Ecote Baja Blanket Backpack, $69, available at Urban Outfitters; Vero Moda Suedette Shorts, $48.27, available at ASOS; Topshop Yellow Scallop Short Sleeve Silk Shirt, $76, available at Topshop; Happy Socks Over and Under, $10, available at Revolve Clothing.

If You’re Required To Wear A Uniform—A uniform doesn’t have to squash your style spirit. Take note from fall '11 collections and experiment by wearing a fun, bright cardigan. Personally, I think nothing says "cool schoolgirl" more than these Comme des Garçons Play Converse sneakers…I might just have to snag a pair!
Zara Openwork Cardigan, $49.99, available at Zara; The Cambridge Satchel Company Vintage Body, $161.25, available at The Cambridge Satchel Company; F21 Plaid A-Line Skirt, $13.80, available at Forever21; Comme Des Garcons Play Converse, $105, available at Tobi.
