8 Incredible Hot Cocoas To Try This Fall

In a world that's positively pumpkin-obsessed during the fall months, it can be easy to overlook the classic hot chocolate. Unassuming, old-school, but always delicious — it's the underdog of the seasonal hot drink menu. Since, we find few things more comforting than curling up with a delicious cup of cocoa, we took it upon ourselves to find the absolute best variations in town. (Trust us, it was very difficult work.) From salted-caramel concoctions to thick, rich, Mexican-style chocolate, we can guarantee all of these will satisfy even the sweetest sweet tooth.

Hot Chocolate at Dolcezza Gelato
While this local mini-chain might be known for its creamy, ultra-indulgent gelato, the colder weather brings a sinfully rich hot chocolate to the menu. Order a cup and add an alfajor, a traditional dulce de leche cookie sandwich, for true bliss.

White Hot Chocolate at Locolat Cafe
Handmade Belgian chocolate + milk = the best afternoon treat ever. We love the white hot chocolate at this Adams Morgan spot because it's a little lighter but still just as delicious as a traditional cocoa.
Locolat Cafe, 1781 Florida Avenue NW; 202-518-2570.

Carmen Miranda Hot Chocolate at Artfully Chocolate
This shop is known for its chocolaty confections, not the least of which is the famous hot cocoa bar. Each drink is named after a classic movie star or diva. Our preference is the Carmen Miranda, which is made with raspberry syrup and topped with dried strawberries.
Artfully Chocolate, 2003A Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, 703-635-7917; 506 John Carlyle Street, Alexandria, 703-575-8686.

Salted Caramel Co Co at Co Co. Sala
Who doesn't love salted caramel? No one, that's who. The out-of-this-world drink can be made cold or hot, and of course, there's plenty of other chocolate delicacies to choose from at Co Co. Sala.

Hot Chocolate at Chinatown Coffee Co.
Like everything at this cool H Street NW coffee shop, the hot chocolate is made with quality ingredients (cocoa from Ghana, organic milk from grass-fed cows). Add a shot of espresso for a caffeinated boost.
Chinatown Coffee Co., 929 F Street NW; 202-320-0405.

Boozy Hot Chocolate at Poste Moderne Brasserie
Enjoy this hot chocolate made with spicy chili cocoa, bourbon, and Grand Marnier on Poste's patio — it's decked out with blankets, fire pits, and wintry bar snacks. The only way you could get more cozy is if you were on your own couch.
Poste Moderne Brasserie, 555 8th Street NW; 202-783-6060.

Hot Chocolate at Pitango Gelato
Another gelato shop with hot chocolate that's as good as the frozen offerings? Indeed. The amazingly thick, rich hot chocolate at Pitango is outstanding on its own, but even better with a scoop of stracciatella gelato on the side.

Mexican Hot Chocolate at Oyamel
It's no surprise that José Andrés' Penn Quarter outpost would serve up a to-die-for Mexican hot chocolate, but this drink is seriously a dessert in itself. It's made with imported Mexican chocolate, roasted sugar, and a whole flight of spices.

Oyamel, 401 7th Street NW; 202-628-1005.
