An Indie Playlist From Our Obsession, A Fine Frenzy

It would appear that L.A. songstress, Alison Sudol, known professionally as A Fine Frenzy, has done it all. From designing clothes, to supporting philanthropic causes, to churning out positively addicting tunes, this alternative artist seems to have her creative bases covered. It shouldn’t be too surprising, then, that Sudol has recently also created an entire new album, short film, and iPad book inspired by an original fable she wrote. Busy girl!
Sudol’s fable, The Story of Pines, follows a single surviving pine tree, named Pine, after her surrounding forest was destroyed. Firmly grounded in both her literal and figurative roots, Pine is hesitant to follow her adventurous friend, Bird, on a journey in search of a new home. Reassured of her strength of character, however, (Bird says, “As long as you’re you, you’ll always be you”) Pine eventually concedes. She floats along, suspended in the air by numerous colorful balloons, and picks up valuable lessons about friendship, giving, and new beginnings along the way. The story inspires children and adults like, reminding all audiences of some of the most basic and most important life lessons that are often easy to forget.

Ever the vocal shape-shifter – haunting one moment, soothing another, and uplifting the next – Sudol brings her undeniable artistic skill back to her third album, appropriately called PINES. Her already captivating voice is only enhanced by the positive message that her narrative provides.
As if that weren’t enough, both her iBook – with touch-sensitive illustrations by Jen Lobo – and short film, directed by Musa Booker, serve as stunning visual extensions of the audio album. Lyrics and music are sprinkled throughout Sudol’s narration in each, creating a fascinatingly multi-dimensional experience that incorporates a variety of art forms.
Whether you’re in the mood for a bedtime story, some scintillating music, or a moving short-film, The Story of Pines is the answer to everything your artsy heart desires.
