The best runway looks fall into one of two categories: They're either incredible, but too confusing or fancy for real life, or something you will wear the hell out of as soon as possible. And this NYFW, it was mostly the latter.
This inevitably means that even some of the biggest shows delivered looks that weren't exactly groundbreaking — the '70s revival we've been seeing for months isn't going anywhere, and whether you like it or not, the '90s throwbacks aren't, either. And that's good news: The on-trend items we already own still work, and we can piece together some newer takes without a lot of work.
The flares, suede, slip dresses, and miniskirts are being adapted for the seasons to come, but with some fresh prints, embellishments, and standout details that make them feel brand new. Tweaks come in the form of contrast stitching; high, ruffled necklines, and bold ways to layer. It's not the obvious warm-weather tropical prints or beach-inspired wares you might expect for spring; the trends ahead are quirky, clever, and keep some of the best parts of the cold-weather stuff we're already wearing.
Ahead, get primed on 10 must-know trends for spring and summer 2016 — or right now with some clever styling — for your viewing and outfit-planning pleasure.
