Well, that was fast. Just one day after the release of Divergent, Summit/Lionsgate has already greenlit a sequel. And why wouldn't they? The sci-fi saga lit the box office ablaze after its Thursday midnight release, generating $56 million dollars worth of weekend business.
Based on Veronica Roth's best-selling dystopian YA novel, Divergent stars Hollywood It Girl Shailene Woodley and is often compared Lionsgate's other little book-to-film franchise-that-could, The Hunger Games. With the film almost recouping its entire $85 million dollar budget in one weekend, it's no surprise that the studio was quick to pull the trigger on a sequel.
What is surprising however, is how soon the sequel will be released. Woodley and rest of the film's cast just finished the Divergent press whirlwind and are now scheduled to begin filming part two next month. The sequel, Insurgent already has a release date of March 20, 2015, with the third installment in the series following in March 2016. How Woodley will ever find the time to make her own toothpaste now, is beyond us. (Mashable)
