Photo: Courtesy Universal Pictures.The thing about the success of Pitch Perfect, 2012's parody-but-not-a-parody/musical-but-not-a-musical a cappella underdog story, is that it actually became more successful the further it got away from the box office. The film made $113 million with an indie-level budget of $17 million. Frankly, you'd be stupid not to make a sequel — and that's before you even bring up Rebel Wilson and stress vomiting.
Now, even though we have no actual guarantees that Wilson and star Anna Kendrick will be back for a second round, there is some news that the untitled sequel to Pitch Perfect will be in solid, familiar hands. Variety is reporting that Elizabeth Banks, who you all remember as salty ICCA commentator Gail Abernathy-McKadden, will be directing the next installment.

To date, Banks has only directed three shorts, including a segment of last year's widely-bashed Movie 43. Nonetheless, since we've all seen her comic chops on display in 30 Rock, Wet Hot American Summer, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and, yeah, The Hunger Games, we're pretty sure she can bring the funny behind the lens.
The script for PP2 (which we will be calling the sequel until otherwise instructed) comes from original Pitch Perfect scribe, Kay Cannon. Three cheers for continuity!
