The nominations for the 2014 British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards are here! And, it seems this year the Brits could finally win back the Best Film award from their American friends.
Alfonso Cuarón’s out-of-this-world (literally) drama, Gravity, earned an impressive 11 nominations, including nods in both the Best Film and Outstanding British Film categories. Following closely with 10 nominations each is Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and David O. Russell’s American Hustle. Surprisingly, Justin Chadwick’s Mandela biopic received only a single nod in the Outstanding British Film category — neither Idris Elba nor Naomie Harris are nominees.
The Best Actress category includes one hell of a lineup, including British stars Judi Dench (Philomena) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) battling against Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), and Sandra Bullock (Gravity). In the Leading Actor category, the only British nominee, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), faces stiff competition from Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf Of Wall Street), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), and Christian Bale (American Hustle). Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts, along with Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper are noted in the supporting actress and actor categories, respectively.
Hosted by Stephen Fry, the BAFTA 2014 winners will be announced in a ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday, February 16. See the complete list of nominees below. We've got to catch up on our movie watching, stat.
