Today's forecast calls for partly sunny with a high chance of shade, courtesy of Nicki Minaj. The rapper won the BET award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the fifth time in a row and used her nearly four-minute-long acceptance speech to talk about death and disses — you know, casual award ceremony fodder.
Minaj began her speech by throwing some professional shade towards fellow category nominee Iggy Azalea, an artist rumored to employ ghostwriters for her tracks. "What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it," she said. She then posed, cast some side-eye, and said, "No, no, no shade, no, no, no shade," her side-eye game still going strong.
Then came death. “The other day, literally, I didn’t tell anybody this, I really thought I was about to die. Like, I was saying my prayers to die." (Death seems to be a hot topic amongst the music industry right now, no?) Minaj continued to explain that she didn't want to call an ambulance because "Well, if I call an ambulance, it’s gonna be on TMZ." And, then the story for the next week would be speculation over what prompted Minaj to call the paramedics. Good call (no pun intended, honest!) on her part. (Vulture)
