In a week that's already been full of LGBTQ pride, Ellen Page just upped the ante. The actress appeared at a Las Vegas convention for gay rights and announced to the adoring crowd that she herself is gay. Page gave an emotional speech that we imagine didn't leave a dry eye in the house. "I am here today because I am gay," she told the audience. "And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time."
She continued by acknowledging the hardships that she herself has gone through, and even the pressures put on her — and all actresses — by the industry. "I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out," she said. "It's weird because here I am, an actress, representing — at least in some sense — an industry that places crushing standards on all of us...standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me."
Page received a standing ovation during her speech, but she made sure the spotlight wasn't just on her. She also took time to acknowledge those before her who have had the strength to come out, in particular football player Michael Sam. After the news broke — and a public congratulations from the Human Rights Campaign — Page tweeted out "Thank you @HRC and everyone for all the love and support." We don't think we're alone when we say thank you Ellen Page. (CNN)
