Lana Del Rey’s Disney Cover Is As Sharp As Maleficent’s Cheeks

Think what you want about the actual 56th annual Grammy Awards, but Lana Del Rey and Angelina Jolie stole the whole show. Well, them and Beyoncé, but Bey's a given. As promised by the Disney folks, Grammy viewers were gifted their first listen of Del Rey's cover of "Once Upon a Dream," Sleeping Beauty and Prince Phillip's theme song in Maleficent. Del Rey's cover, however, carries a more sinister vibe than the original Mickey Mouse Club one.
Like her contribution to The Great Gatsby soundtrack (which, while we're on the subject, was robbed by the Academy), "Once Upon a Dream" is brooding with old-school strings and melancholy. It's haunting, hypnotic, and — oh, we can go on and on about how awesome it is, but have a listen for yourself.

The track is available for a limited time over at Google Play for a whopping zero dollars. iTunes users will inevitably find a way to make it work in their favor, too. We might also suggest you tumble a little further down the Maleficent rabbit hole and click through to watch the trailer it premiered with because Jolie's cheekbones are worthy of an Oscar, or at least a wax figure at Planet Hollywood.
