To help you break out of your regular drinks routine, we revisited classic, well-loved pizza-and-beer joints, craft-beer pioneers, and outdoor hangs, rediscovering what was so wonderful about them in the first place. With those qualities in mind, we scoured San Francisco for new booze and food options, finding a celebrated chef’s seasonal take on classic sports bar grub, a bowling alley with top-notch food and mind-blowing art, and so much more. If you know your way around craft beer, you probably owe it to Dave McLean. A craft-beer pioneer, he’s been practicing the art of the brew at Magnolia on Haight Street for 15 years. A haven of house-made brews (created in the basement), the pub's lovingly written taste profiles educate and make you thirsty for more. But devout connoisseurs should also make a pilgrimage to the new Abbot's Cellar, a 3,000-square-foot dining room in the Mission. Equipped with a two-story, stone-encased beer cellar, delicacies like bone marrow, rabbit, and quail, three-course and five-course tasting menus, and a rotating list of 120-curated brews, this is an adventure for foodies and beer lovers, alike.

Sometimes a no-frills backyard to toss back a few — like the patio of the divey and delightful El Rio, on the border of the Mission and Bernal Heights — is exactly what you need. Other times, you aspire to something a little less rough around the edges. Bar Agricole is a minimalist, well-appointed urban sanctuary with a James Beard-recognized cocktails' program. Accompanying the fresh, herbaceous drinks are dishes like duck liver on toast and slow-roasted salmon from chef Brandon Jew. So civilized.

Golden Boy is an institution with 30 years of serving up piping-hot sheets of mouthwatering clam-and-garlic pizza to its name. Seeing as a slice and a beer to wash it down, will only set you back $8, who's to argue with history? But if you’re looking to tap into the current craze for artisanal pizza, you can find a spot for savory, seasonal thin-crust gourmet pie and world-class cocktails at Beretta. What's more, the kitchen can vegan-ize any pie — even sausage! Ask for a spicy margherita with burrata and wash it down with the nuestra paloma. Made of tequila, elderflower, Cointreau, grapefruit, and bitters, it's one of the finest concoctions ever to cross our lips.

We’ve spent many days chasing beer-pong glory at Park 77. But we aren't college kids any more, so the multi-generational, suddenly hipster, equally boozy sport of bowling is looking ever-more attractive. Decorated with eye-catching murals, the shiny, new Mission Bowling Club, is our pick. Co-owner Sommer Peterson suggests you bowl first to work up your appetite, then stay for a seasonal meal from executive chef Anthony Myint. The sausage corn dog was fantastic, and we bet you've never found ratatouille at a bowling alley this good.

The Kezar Pub is perhaps the city’s most honored sports bars — and for good reason. With giant TVs, beer by the pitcher, and diehard fans, it's a certified platinum for watching the Niners, Giants, and incoming Warriors. But when we want the sports bar equivalent of premium box seats, we go to chef-owned Public House. Airy, spacious, tricked out with a giant wall of 78 kegs (!!), and headed by James Beard-winner Traci Des Jardins, Public House sports 24 beers on tap, three cask ales, and locally sourced meats and produce. The mini corn dogs. fish and chips, and Magnolia brewmaster Dave McLean's exclusive house beer make this a home run.
