An old-school staple gets glamorous. By Christene Barberich & Piera Gelardi
opener_backpacktrendWe'll be the first to admit that the prospect of backpacks making a comeback is kind of surprising. If you're like us, you dropped yours off at Housing Works shortly before (or after) the Clinton administration and you never looked back.
Well, it seems looking back is where it's at, at least when it comes to our latest accessory obsession. Unlike the backpack you had when you actually needed one, the new regime of hands-free totes are marked by slick festive fabrics, elegant features, and proportionately perfect shapes that put those bland fashion'less college bags in the back of the class. It might take a bit of getting used to, but we'd gladly swap out the season's favorite shoulder-bag for Sophie Hulme's galactic-cool sequined backpack or Alex Wang's rebel-chic leather version. Sort of the glam graduate…we love it.
