There's a lot that can be said about our personal love affairs with denim. From strong opinions (to wash or not to wash?) to nostalgia ('90s wide legs, anyone?) to emotions (rips in the crotch, and the tear-filled mourning sesh that follows), our complex relationship with denim is the sartorial equivalent to our dating history. Old loves that never die (see tattered boyfriend jeans), new loves that come and go (remember colored denim?) — we've been with them all. And, with the variety of styles in which they come — from Pollock-splatted carpenter pants to artfully destroyed, acid-wash mom jeans — the denim dating pool is plentiful.
But, there are a few standby styles that we always come back to: dark skinnies, worn-in boyfriends, and high-rise leg-lengtheners. So, we've partnered with the loyal denim mainstay American Eagle Outfitters to test-drive their classic fall iterations. Up ahead, see how six R29 staffers take to task in making these trusted go-tos work with their personal styles, while dishing on their own relationships with the beloved twill. What can we say? Denim makes us feel feelings.
