Though she's 24, Emma Roberts is a pro at playing younger. (Of course, who in Hollywood isn't?) From Palo Alto to Ashby, she's constantly revisiting high school on the big screen. It appears all those teen angst roles are finally catching up to her, because her outfit yesterday looked straight out of My So-Called Life. It's a little grungy, a little goth, and despite all that black, thoroughly fresh. And, it belongs in your closet even if you're not channeling an adolescent.
Roberts broke up the head-to-toe noir with a ribbed gray turtleneck that she cleverly layered under her silk dress. Tossing a slinky slip over your favorite sweater is a genius way to get more milage out of spring purchases. The trick is to avoid chunky knits. Cozy as they may be, they never look quite right layered under warm-weather pieces. She added Balenciaga biker boots and a moto jacket, then finished it off with opaque tights since it was especially dreary in New York. But, when you steal the look — and you absolutely should — feel free to skip the tights.
