The Red Carpet Trend Everyone’s Suddenly Doing

All eyes may have been on Anne Hathaway’s navy Richard Nicoll gown at the Interstellar movie premiere earlier this week, but look beyond the bias-cut silk dress and you’ll see that the actress had another style coup worth highlighting. The posed step-and-repeat shots taken from behind (often an afterthought for red carpet photographers) reveal a long, star-embellished silver chain, which hung down Hathaway’s back rather than across her décolletage.
This “backlace” (as The Daily Mail dubs it) is a subtly sexy touch, and definitely more sophisticated than piled-on jewels. Hathaway's not the only one serving it up, either. Fellow stars like Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicole Kidman (who wore the trend quite fetchingly in her Chanel No. 5 campaign) prove that these back-drop necklaces are a refreshing twist on basic red carpet accessorizing.
While the move seems totally modern, we actually have the 1920s to thank for inspiring it.Think of this flapper-esque look as the perfect, more formal antidote to another resurrected necklace fad, the choker. Not only does it work for all ages and nearly any type of dress, it looks especially chic with long-sleeved, open-back gowns that always seem to crop up at the Oscars (paging Hilary Swank!). And, with the 2015 awards shows looming on the horizon, the backlace just might be the surprise trend of the season. (The Daily Mail)
