Teachers Strike Day 2 — Here's What We Suggest You Do!

No, school is definitely not still out for summer. The picketers — and maybe even the extra kids you see hanging around — are signs of the largest walkout for Chicago Public Schools in 25 years. It's day two now, and while we're bummed that teachers' needs aren't being met (especially considering the immense value of the work they do), if, as a teacher or student, you find yourself with an unexpected day off, here are a few ways you can keep yourself occupied until it's time for the first period bell to ring again.
1. If you have kiddies, Chicago Public Schools opened 147 "Children First" sites to help ensure that as little classroom time is missed as possible. View the full list on the Chicago Public School website.
2. Keep your wallet closed and go see Sue and the Grainger Hall of Gems at the Field Museum. It's free today. Now, that's something that's in everyones' favor.

3. Get cultured (or at least a bite to eat) at the Chicago Turkish Festival, taking place in Daley Plaza from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. now through September 12. Going on its 10th year, experience Turkish cuisine, fashion, arts and crafts, and live performances without having to buy that plane ticket to Istanbul. Then again, we wouldn't want you to have that much spare time on your hands.

4. And you thought the outdoor concert season was over. Tuesdays on the Terrace (pictured) at the Museum of Contemporary Art is still going strong — and so is this amazing weather we've been having. Tonight, Chicago jazz musician Renee Baker will be performing at 5:30 p.m. Stretch out on a blanket, or rent a chair for $5. No outside food or beverages are allowed, but there's a dinner buffet spread ($24), as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, and other grilled eats. Teachers can enjoy the wine and cocktails, too.

5. Stress has been known to wreck havoc on the skin.
