The jellyfish haircut has been trending recently, but it's actually from the '80s. Yes, we're going past Y2K to get to some deep (hair)cuts, and it's surprisingly easy to create. Sheridan Rose Shaw, O&M COR Creator, tells Refinery29 Australia the jellyfish haircut is a "two-tiered, disconnected haircut" that gives mushroom, in a good way. "Think of it like this: a structured mushroom with tentacles. Did you know this haircut actually trended in the 80s? We've modernised it and made it much cooler and less bulky than it ever was back then," she says. "It's a statement, but it's a good one."

You may have seen the haircut on celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani, because it's been a go-to over the past year. Below, we have all the information you need to know about the jellyfish haircut, including whether it will work on your face shape and hair type.
Does the jellyfish haircut work on any face shape?
Yes! Shaw says the jellyfish haircut can be customised to suit any face shape. "That said, some haircuts aren't really about face shape. They're about attidue, and you'll absolutely need some of that to pull this off because of its heavy disconnection," she says.
How do you style the jellyfish haircut?
"For the jellyfish haircut, you actually want to encourage as much natural texture as possible, that's what makes it work even better," the O&M COR creator adds. "A diffuser and a curl enhancing product range go hand in hand here." She recommends the Curl Curl Cream for definition without crunch, while also keeping the two tiers looking intentional (rather than two separate haircuts trying to fight for attention). R29 also loves the Laifen Hair Dryer with diffuser — the perfect Dyson dupe.
What other products enhance the jellyfish haircut?
According to Shaw, the best way to bring a jellyfish haircut to life is to add some grit, texture and volume. For that, you'll be needing the O&M Desert Dry Texture Spray and O&M Thique Volumising Powder. The last thing you want is a flat and limp jellyfish.

Is it better to have thick or thin hair for the jellyfish haircut?
Sadly, the jellyfish haircut isn't for the thin-haired girlies. But there are plenty of other trending haircuts you can try if you're not able to jump on this style. "Medium to thick hair is your best friend hair, otherwise, it's a no deal!" Shaw says. "You need enough density in that top section to hold the shape and make the disconnection work the way it should.
