This Is Our Jam: Pictureplane, “Real Is A Feeling”

Pictureplane’s best moments have come from songs like “Goth Star,” where snippets of vocal fragments gradually assemble to build a melody. The effect is like watching a mirror shatter in reverse slow motion: Sharp edges slide into place, spiderweb cracks coalesce, and a clear image is eventually reflected. “Real is a Feeling” marks a change for Pictureplane in that you don't have to let the song unfold to find the hook. While Pictureplane still employ the darkwave electro and ravey fuzz of past releases, the vocals aren't chopped or disjointed. Instead, they flow smoothly over Atari mayhem creating a mixture of sex, abrasion, and melody that is more straightforward synthpop than studio collage. The result is ready for the dance floor, and one of Pictureplane's catchiest tracks thus far.
