This Is Our Jam: Gang Gang Dance, “Mindkilla”

Gang Gang Dance
are so consistently ahead of the curve that even when musical reference points can be placed, they sounds stolen from a future. “Mindkilla,” the new single from the forthcoming Eye Contact, has musical cues that range from early ‘90s anthem house to world music. Lizzi Bougatsos, indomitable as always, rises above this pan-cultural fray to warble lyrics that include both Dune references and a warped interpolation of “Hush, Little Baby.” All mixed together, this bizarre milieu somehow unifies to attain avant pop perfection. I’d like to think if Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is ever remade, the music they experience as their phone booth travels to the future would sound something like this.
