Woods are proud Luddites. Their recording is consciously lo-fi, they signed like-minded revivalist Kurt Vile to their label, Woodsist, and they are eager students of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and (especially) Young. Woods even recorded their new album in Warwick, New York—a town that, according to Wikipedia, is home to the annual Applefest (!). “Pushing Onlys” is more of the same sepia-toned nature rock found on their first five albums. A genuine love of rock history and a mastery of sleepy melody has allowed Woods to instill an effortless nostalgia to their jams. Think of “Pushing Onlys” as a summer lake house that you return to year after year; The aged decor and musty odors recreate the halcyon feeling of summer days long past.
