This Is Our Jam: Dive, “Sometime”

Cole Smith is the guitarist for Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils, a band who’s jangly, campfire guitars are warm, inviting, and carefree. Smith’s side project, Dive, turns toward more internal melodies, trading summertime repose for coolly autumnal swaths of guitar, keyboard, and post-punk percussion. "Sometime" sounds like fraying pieces of the same sonic quilt were stitched back together by a precise, krautrock-leaning rhythm section. Yet, while CAN is cited as key influence, it's also fitting that Dive shares part of their name with classic shoegazers Slowdive, and nearly shares a song title with My Bloody Valentine—“Sometime” occupies a similar arena of indiepop, where hard edges soften as the volume increases.
