Of all the songs on the excellent Return of 4Eva
mixtape, It may seem like an odd choice to highlight “Country Shit (Remix).
” After all, the original is a year old, and tracks like “Sookie Now,” “Rotation,” and “Lions and Lambs,” are formidable bangers that deserve recognition in their own right. Yet as good as the rest of Return of 4Eva is (and it is really really good) “Country Shit” still manages to best represent Big K.R.I.T.
’s brand of Southern-fried underdog hip-hop in a way that none of his other productions have quite achieved. K.R.I.T.’s new verse sounds reinvigorated, and he throws Ludacris on the track out of the gate with “Oh
” levels of guest-spot gusto. This track was huge before, and Luda seems built for Big K.R.I.T.’s snare taps and chopped vocal hook. Bun B, too, takes on “Country Shit” with a hungry dexterity that would seem effortless were it not so damn impressive. Big K.R.I.T. now has a true anthem behind him and great things ahead of him.
