Discovered: The Source Of Those Shockingly Cool Window Displays At Saks

3-SKULLS-CLOSE-UP---SAKS-SHADOW-BOXslide
We stopped in our tracks when we spotted the Céline bags and Louboutin shoes in the window of Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase — but not because of the luxe designer goodies themselves. What floored us was the fact that they're dangling on the antlers of an Australian deer skull, bedecked in glittering crystals. Where could this awesome combination of artistry and advertising have come from? None other than local designer Martí Horwitz, as it turns out.
The contemporary ready-to-wear designer hadn’t intended on selling the skulls. “I have a clothing line full of basics, and needed to create something with an edge to photograph with the collection," she says. "I love taking something scary and adorning it with something very feminine and beautiful. After [debuting the skulls] in one of my lookbooks, I started getting requests to purchase the skulls.”
And now, we’re leaking the scoop on where to snatch one of these crazy-cool works for yourself, so you can add instant edge to your living room — just contact the designer to score yours. The small versions range from $700 to $900, while larger options will run you between $1,500 and $2,000. How's that for art-inspiring-fashion-inspiring-art?
