A Kathleen Hanna Documentary Is Finally On The Horizon

Riot Grrrls, listen up! For those of you who are wondering why there hasn't been a bio film made about revolutionary feminist, musician, activist, cultural lightening rod, and style influencer Kathleen Hanna yet (meee!), look no further. Filmmaker and Brooklynite Sini Anderson has done just that with her latest effort, The Punk Singer , a documentary film all about the former Bikini Kill front-grrrl. Through combining more than 20 years of archival footage (swoon!), intimate interviews with former bandmates (like Bikini Kill's Kathi Wilcox and Le Tigre's Johanna Fateman and J.D. Samson), contemporaries, legends (Joan Jett, anyone?!), feminist scholars and activists, and even an appearance by hubby Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys, and Hanna's own frank, honest testimony, Anderson manages to weave an electric narrative shining a floodlight on the famously reclusive and controversial artist. We know—amazing, right? But don't expect to see this film billed outside of the Sunshine on Houston anytime soon; The Punk Singer, financed entirely from Anderson's personal savings and a meager donations-based budget, is stuck in post-production due to dwindling funds. In true punk-rock DIY fashion, Anderson has taken to Kickstarter to raise money for the film's finishing touches. While Anderson and her crew is more than halfway to their $44,000 goal, time is running out. With less than a month left to donate, make sure to visit The Punk Singer's Kickstarter page to throw down some scratch for color-correcting, sound-mixing, and paying off looming production debts. Let's buck up (literally), and stay true to Hanna's revolutionary statement of solidarity, locality, feminism, and punk rock.
