Home Grown: Natalie Chanin Cultivates a New Denim Line

There's nothing more American than a good pair of blue jeans—or so one might think. With all the fancy washes and foreign manufacturers out there, the art of denim has become a bit separated from its roots. Enter Alabama Denim, a new line debuting this month that is "grown-to-sewn" in the USA. Made of 100% organic cotton and completely hand-sewn, the fabric itself is dyed naturally with real indigo in collaboration with Goods of Conscience, an organization that provides work for the disadvantaged.

Owner and designer Natalie Chanin is no stranger to artisan work—her Alabama Chanin lifestyle brand is a constantly changing collection of handmade, limited-edition products like tees, jewelry, and home decorations all made by local Florence, Alabama craftsmen. Chanin herself specializes in quilting and stitching techniques from the depression-era South. Her signature skilled embellishments add a special quality to the stylish denim jackets, dresses, and wrapskirts in the collection, which are decorated with meticulous stiching patterns.
