HBO Girls Season 3 - TV Show Outfits, Lena Dunham Style

Many of our must-watch TV shows haven't returned yet from winter hiatus (cough, Scandal, cough), and our ho-hum Sunday night lineup could certainly use a jolt now that Homeland is finito 'til next fall. Which is why we're overjoyed to welcome back our favorite band of Brooklynites. Yep, Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna, and Co. are returning once more for season three of HBO's Girls tomorrow night — oh, and did we mention how excited we are? We're itching to see how lovestruck Marnie handles Charlie's abrupt departure after season two's fairy-tale-esque finale. And, what's to become of the rekindled romance between Hannah and Adam? Is Shosh's hair going to become its own character? Okay, okay, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Needless to say, we're sure wunderkind Lena Dunham has more than a few plot twists up Hannah's wrinkled, possibly stained sleeve.

In the meantime, though, we sat down with Jenn Rogien, the show's costume designer, for a sartorial sneak peek at what we'll find in the foursome's closets this time around. The Disheveled One
"The phrase I use to describe Hannah’s style in season three is ironically the tagline from season two: Almost getting it kind of together.” — Jenn Rogien

Hannah's everyday style is pretty unkempt — but we totally love her for it. She's never accidentally on trend, and, par for the course, nothing has been properly ironed. But, post-grad Horvath is learning — slowly, mind you — but she is learning, well, something. She's a little less jumbled than we've previously seen her, and her try-new-things attitude has yielded a surprising wardrobe addition to her mishmash collection of quirky prints, kooky necklaces, and drop-waist dresses: pants. While that's not anything we'd deem too groundbreaking, wearing trousers brings Hannah one step closer to being, like, an adult.

The Put-Together One
"I wouldn't go so far as to call Marnie polished; instead, I'd say she's put together. And, season three is all about a more relaxed fit for her."

Poor Marnie! By the looks of season three's trailer, she's in for an uphill recovery from an abrupt, out-of-left-field breakup with Charlie, her long-term, on-again-off-again love interest. And, it's likely she'll adapt her structured, calculated manner of dressing (that is, those fitted, Ann Taylor-y dresses) to reflect her newfound heartbreak and emotional vulnerability, too. The jeans will go from flared to boyfriend — and don't be surprised to see Marnie donning a graphic, lightweight sweater or two (how on trend of her!). As she becomes less uptight and more laid-back, so do her sartorial tastes.

The Eclectic One
"Jessa is the most consistent character in terms of fashion, probably because she’s never been consistent."

Jessa certainly doesn’t do what’s trendy for the sake of being trendy. So, don't even think about using the words boho chic to describe her eclectic, offbeat fashion sense. She doesn’t wear maxi-dresses — she rocks floor-length gowns in the middle of the day because that's what suits her, plain and simple. While we're used to seeing this ethereal style maven in lighter, airier clothes, keep your eyes peeled for deeper colors and fabrics this season — and a little less sheerness overall. Side note: How awesome would it be to hear Marnie's inner monologue whenever Jessa makes a dramatic entrance? Oh, we're sure there will be plenty of eye-rolling this season.

The Feminine One
"Shoshanna’s look is more streamlined and body-con than ever before — less of her traditional fit-and-flare dresses. Shosh's colors are stronger and more saturated, too. But, don't worry — she's still her very feminine self."

Instead of the soft pastels we’ve seen her in over the past two seasons, Shoshanna’s adopting punchier hues to accompany the let-loose phase of her NYU education. It was sure to hit this emoji-using, SATC-loving millennial by senior year — haven't we all been there at some point in our lives, too? As Shosh navigates the trials and tribulations of haphazard one-night stands and sloppy dance-floor make-outs, a few heels and silhouette-skimming outfits will surely find a place in her ladylike wardrobe.
