This Is Our Jam Premieres: 2:54, “Killer” (Seal Cover)

254
Coming off the release of an excellent self-titled album, you’d think brooding London duo 2:54 (a.k.a. Musical Muses Colette and Hannah Thurlow) deserved to have a little bit of fun. As it turns out, that’s not exactly the case with their version of Seal’s '91 hit, “Killer,” whose deadly serious lyrics about racism were originally tempered by smooth R&B that ventured into house music territory.
2:54 treats the track with due reverence, replacing its funky groove with dark, rhythm-driven atmospherics. The result is a song no less affecting than the original (and quite a bit more serious) — a thematic departure where 2:54's signature gloom is nicely employed.
