7 Solutions To Your Biggest Winter Skin Problem

It's not always easy to remember to wear sunscreen in the summer, but it's hard to forget it completely. Warm temperatures plus the blazing sun make covering up kind of a no-brainer. But in the winter months, when it’s dark at noon and the thermometer rarely creeps above freezing, only a lunatic would be extra diligent with SPF, right?

Here’s the thing: Anytime it's light outside — meaning you’re not in a pitch-dark coal mine — you’re getting UVA and UVB exposure. Yes, even if there's a blizzard, and even if your breath freezes on your nostrils. That being said, it’s no fun to smear on greasy lotion when you’re icy-cold. Luckily, thanks to the advancements of science, there are plenty of ways to stay protected without breaking out the bottle.

Mist It
What’s cool about this setting spray is that you can spritz it on right over your makeup without looking shiny. It’s also quite cool, literally: The formula contains a silica-based mattifying agent, powerful sunscreens, and refreshing botanical oils (such as peppermint and rosemary) to help lock in your makeup and keep your skin safe. And rest easy, the non-aerosol bottle is environmentally friendly — and still delivers a fine, even spray.

Dust It
We’re willing to bet that if you check the glove compartment or desk drawers of any dermatologist, there’s a high probability you’ll find this handy, brush-on sunscreen. The mineral-based powder is a physical block (that's important, because you can reapply it over makeup during the day). It won’t irritate even the most sensitive skin, plus it provides a hint of sheer coverage in four surprisingly versatile shades.

Swipe It
This creamy balm comes in nearly a dozen hues — from a fleshy nude to a zingy apricot — and goes on sheer while still delivering just the right amount of pigment. It also has avobenzone and octinoxate to block out UVA and UVB rays and keep lips sunburn-free, plus nourishing oils to prevent any of that awful winter cracking.

Swap Your Base For It
There are lots of foundations with SPF. But most of them don't have enough SPF to keep you protected. So rather than going for a foundation with a little sunscreen, why not try a sunscreen with a little foundation?

Our current favorite, Coola Mineral Face SPF 30, manages to absorb into the skin, leaving behind a very pleasing, velvet-matte finish. Full disclosure: It only comes in one shade, so if you’re super-fair or super-dark, you may want to stick to the powder we previously mentioned.

Prime With It
Much like how you’d layer a chunky sweater over a thin knit for maximum coziness, using sunscreen underneath your moisturizer and primer every day is an easy way to protect your skin against the sun’s damaging UVA rays. But, all those steps can be time-consuming, so try an all-in-one product instead. This multipurpose formula from Murad primes your complexion for smooth makeup application while protecting your skin with SPF 30 in one fell swoop. You might want to add another sweater though.

Moisturize With It
You could lather up with the very same sunscreen you wore to the beach last summer, but then you might feel like you're wrapped in cellophane all day. (Sunscreens, by nature, have powerful film-forming technology to help them resist sweat, sand, and salt water.)

Body lotions with SPF, on the other hand, have more moisturizers and fewer of those film agents. And this one, in particular, doesn’t have a telltale sunscreen smell, nor does it leave your body with a chalky, white cast.

Shower With It
It doesn’t look fancy, but the technology in this shower gel is the real deal. (A 2010 study at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center showed that crazy shower-gel sunscreen is, in fact, possible.)

This version uses proprietary encapsulation technology to allow sunscreen molecules to adhere to positively charged skin and keep it protected for hours. Plus, it’s loaded with conditioners and antioxidants, so it leaves skin soft — not parched or greasy. Just be sure to lather up for a full two minutes for maximum protection.

Style With It
This tip may only be applicable for short-haired beauties — or those who like to wear the slicked-back look. Nios Shield Whipped Hair Gel is a medium-to-strong-hold gel spiked with argan oil and SPF 15. The idea is that you slick it on when you style, protecting your scalp from damaging rays. For those not in the market for gel, the brand also offers a creamy leave-in conditioner.
