Recently, a slew of bands have gotten exposure for making music that can seem like little more than a genre exercise. And while there is something to be said for music that wears its influences proudly, it’s far better when a band manages to take old sounds to a new place. Case in point, Portland’s
Radiation City
, whose “The Color of Industry” sounds coated in the warm analog fuzz of an early Phil Spector production, and has a melody that tips a hat to ‘60s girl groups. The result is a song that feels familiar, yet avoids coming across as stale or redundant. This is pop that may be easy to place, but is impossible to ignore.
