When
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
debuted, they split the difference between the earnest sweetness of Sarah Records, and the (slightly) harder-edged, shoegazier indie pop of label-mates Black Tambourine. With “Heart in Your Heartbreak” production from ‘90s alt mega-producer Flood (Nine Inch Nails, U2, Smashing Pumpkins) and mixing by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Arctic Monkeys) cleans up their sound and brings Kip Berman’s vocals to the front of the mix. Berman, though, is hardly Bono, and it would be wrong to cite “Heart in Your Heartbreak” as a departure from the twee homages of their earlier recordings. If anything, Berman’s bashful sensitivity is accentuated with his lisp-y emoting, which, along with The Pains' penchant for perfect pop hooks, is more powerful than ever.
