This Is Our Jam: Surfer Blood, “Miranda”

Power-pop as a genre can generally be described by its size: Big emotions, big guitars, Big Star. No one knows this better than Florida’s Surfer Blood, whose tightly wound hooks and perfectly placed guitar licks have garnered comparisons to Blue Album-era Weezer and Teenage Fanclub—bands for whom perfecting a chorus became something of a science. Yet, while “big” may still be the name of the game for Surfer Blood, new single “Miranda” sees them improving the small things. And as surf-rock flourishes and garage-y guitars still reign supreme, production sees an uptick in resolution, making Surfer Blood sound even Weezer-ier than before. The result is similar to the ‘90s love recently shown by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and like that band, Surfer Blood have evolved gracefully. Like classic Weezer B-side “Suzanne," "Miranda" gives us all that we wanted from a girl.
