Object Lesson: Slim Chance

L.A.-based label Augustine brings some knit wit to their smart new trouser legging. By Meredith Fisher
augustine_objectlessonLeggings are a hot topic lately. You've got the black ones, maybe gray, too, but the textured variety seems equally appealing. Consider then the goods from new design duo Augustine, who have gotten the concept of the modern (ie: functional) legging just right. The brainchild of Los Angeles-based pals Mitzi Guidry and Kelly Lynn Jones, Augustine launched its first collection in spring '06 with a series of ladylike dresses, coats, sweaters, and the aforementioned leggings. The casual but structured line was a spur-of-the-moment collaboration between the two friends who've both experimented with designing in the past.
As for our favorite piece (who could resist?), Augustine's super-soft leggings are made from a Milano jersey blend of rayon and wool. Available in black, brown, or charcoal, this pair gives a long, lean look minus the suffocating feeling inherent of some skinny denim. The nicest feature of all is a bit of graceful ruching punctuated with coconut buttons at the ankle, which creates a nifty trouser-legging hybrid of sorts that can be flared over boots or buttoned up with a pump. Genius. $160.
Augustine is available in New York at La Di Da, 147 Orchard Street, 212-529-7384 and in Los Angeles at Milk, 8209 West 3rd, 323-951-0330. For more information go to www.weareaugustine.com
