This Is Our Jam: Dum Dum Girls, “Lord Knows”

To say that Dum Dum Girls' new End of Daze EP (out today on Sub Pop) continues Dee Dee’s move away from her lo-fi roots would be disingenuous: She’s already left them completely behind. Nowhere is this more evident than on the gorgeous lead single, “Lord Knows,” which plays like a Mazzy Star track coated in the last dregs of ‘60 idealism.
The band, along with producers Richard Gottehrer and The Raveonettes' Sune Rose Wagner, find a balance between the gently strummed guitar and Dee Dee’s wonderfully emotive voice, which reaches Stevie Nicks levels of melancholy. “Oh boy, I can’t hurt you anymore," sings Dee Dee, channeling the holy trinity of regret, heartbreak, and nostalgia. The accompanying video sets the song to a spooky religious rite with a distinctly ‘90s flavor. This is a band where “maturity” has only the best possible connotations.
