This Is Our Jam: Charli XCX, “You’re The One”

charli
In our recent interview with Charli XCX, the British singer gave an unlikely explanation for the spoken-word interludes that pop up in her songs: “I guess that's why I still do those little talking sections in my songs now, because secretly, I still wish I was a rapper,” she said.
As if to underline Charli XCX’s love of hip-hop, “You’re the One” begins with a giant beat and electro-synths that wouldn’t have been out of place on Watch The Throne. When we finally arrive at the quasi-rapped detour wedged between the infectious bubble-goth choruses, it feels just right. “You’re the One” is about drama over genre, and Charli XCX knows that best of all.
