This has been a busy summer for Katy Perry: She appeared on the cover of
Vogue, hung with Britney Spears, and kept the whole world guessing about the status of her relationship with John Mayer. Oh, and she recorded an album. Her third LP, Prism, is due out October 22, but fans are getting a sneak peek of the first single, "Roar," now that it's been leaked. And guys, it is good.
The entire album was designed to be a departure from her earlier material, to show how the artist has matured. "I'm really excited for the world to hear it because she's just...she's taking a new approach," co-writer Bonnie McKee told MTV. "I don't want to say too much about it, but it's definitely different. It's definitely a little more mature than the 'California Gurls' of yesterday."
While there's no denying that "Roar" serves as a growing-up anthem for Perry (the chorus boasts, "I've got the eye of the tiger, the fighter, dancin' through the fire, 'cuz I am the champion and you're gonna hear me roar"), it's also got the head-bopping pop beats we can't help but dance to.
