It's Endometriosis awareness month, and Home and Away star Sophie Dillman has been busy trying to drum up support for the painful disease. It's a chronic condition that occurs after tissue similar to what's found in the uterus grows outside of that area, and doesn't exit the body. Sufferers can experience severe pain, infertility, bloating, heavy periods and more, along with a negative impact on their mental health. Dillman started experiencing symptoms when she was a teenager, one being excruciating pain during her period, which would cause her to vomit and faint in the morning. She finally received a diagnosis while she was studying nursing at university, using her medical knowledge to push doctors to send her tissue samples to the lab.
She tells Refinery29 Australia her friends, family and even medical professionals have suggested outrageous "cures" for her endometriosis, one of which involves invasive surgery. Scroll along to see the unwanted advice Dillman has received.
