The Best Shows & Movies On Netflix Canada In January

Netflix high season is here. It’s the season I like to call, “Netflix and hide indoors until the weather gets warmer.” New year, same self-care strategy! As we curl up on our couches and attempt to avoid going outside at all costs, Netflix has us covered. Here are the top 10 titles coming to Netflix Canada in January.
1. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
The OG installment of this series just gets better with time. You get four best friends, a pair of magical denim, and the origin story of the real-life friendship between Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively. It’s a sweet YA adaptation before sweet YA adaptations were all the rage, and the perfect movie for a girls’ night in.

2. Loving
Loving is based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, the couple behind the groundbreaking Supreme Court ruling on nation-wide anti-miscegenation laws in America in 1967. Richard, a white man, and Mildred, a black woman, were fighting for their right to love freely. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga both give gripping performances, but Negga’s earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. It’s worth watching for her gut-wrenching performance alone.
3. MyBest Friend's Wedding
It’s the rom-com that redefined what a rom-com happy ending could look like. Julia Roberts plays Julianne Potter, a restaurant critic in love with her best friend, Michael, played by Dermot Mulroney. Cameron Diaz is Kimmy, the perky villain we’re not supposed to — but can’t help but — root for. My Best Friend’s Wedding is a rom-com that definitely holds up.
4. Bring It On series
I’m not sure why Gabrielle Union didn’t star in every single one of the Bring It On films since she still looks the same age she was when she first played Isis, the captain of the East Compton Clovers, in 2000. Eighteen years later, the franchise lives on through follow-ups like Bring It On Again, Bring It On: All or Nothing, BringIt On: Fight to the Finish, and Bring It On: In It to Win It. Get your spirit stick ready because all of these gems are heading to Netflix Canada in January.
5. The Bourne Identity franchise
This one’s for the action lovers. The Bourne films have better names than the Bring It On sequels and they all star Matt Damon, who unlike Gabrielle Union, is definitely aging. He still looks great and Jason Bourne’s mortality is why the stakes are just as high in the fourth installment as they were in the first, even if his memory is slowly creeping back. Enjoy The Bourne Legacy, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum in that order starting January 2.

6. FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (Netflix Original)
I can’t be the only one who thinks about the mess that was The Fyre Festival at least once a week. It was the botched music festival turned meme that had all of our timelines SHOOK. The Netflix Original documentary will explore the festival that left influencers wondering why they didn’t just stick to Coachella.
7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Season 4 Part 2 (Netflix Original)
The long-awaited final episodes of the Emmy-nominated series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will finally hit Netflix Canada on January 25. The wacky hijinks of Kimmy, Lillian, and Titus are coming to an end but first, let’s watch them clumsily navigate through new directions in their lives and career, in their classic zany way.
8. Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes
True-crime heads, where you at? Fans of Making A Murderer are sure to obsess over Netflix’s new docu-series that will feature audio interviews with Ted Bundy while on death row that have never been heard before. To make this extra creepy (or fascinating, whichever you’re into), the series will launch exactly 30 years after the date of Bundy’s execution.
9. Sex Education (Netflix Original)
As the conversation around sex education in this country heats up, Netflix is delivering an original series that has nothing to do with the Ontario government’s plans to roll back the province’s sex-ed curriculum, but it does give a modern take on a young man (Asa Butterfield) exploring questions about sex, as he and a classmate start their own health clinic inspired by his sex-therapist mom (Gillian Anderson). The lessons will begin on January 11.

10. Carmen Sandiego (Netflix Original)
Netflix knows exactly where Carmen Sandiego is. This new animated series, based on the beloved edutainment franchise of the same name, is coming to Netflix in the new year. Kids who grew up in the ’90s are counting down the days until January 18. Just me? Carmen is voiced by Jane TheVirgin’s Gina Rodriguez and her best friend and accomplice, Player, is voiced by Stranger Things’ Finn Wolhard.
