Ariana Grande was caught on video licking a donut at a pastry shop in California this week. Though that was a pretty icky moment in itself, a separate issue captured on camera landed the "Problem" singer in hot water. Near the end of the security tape footage, Grande apparently makes a comment when a Wolfee Donuts employee appears with a tray of jumbo-sized treats: "What the fuck is that?" she can be heard saying. "I hate Americans. I hate America." In the wake of the video's release by TMZ, Grande addressed the footage. "I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I've always made it clear that I love my county (sic)," the singer told Fox. "What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words." We get it: We all say things when we think no one is paying attention that we wouldn't want blasted across the internet. But there was definitely something patronizing and even shaming about Grande's comment. Even she's admitting to that. As Grande told Fox, she made the comment because she was frustrated by "how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health." We'll give her props for one thing: She's doing an admirable job of trying to spin this ugly little moment. But at the end of the day, she was hanging out in a donut shop. What was she expecting to find there, raw broccoli?
