Why You'll Be Seeing Ellie Bamber Everywhere Soon

Shawn Mendes seems head-over-heels in love in the music video for his song, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” The 18-year-old singer chases his red-headed girlfriend around the streets of Paris and Amsterdam. He gazes wistfully at her adventurous antics. He runs towards a cliff’s edge with her. All in all, I was convinced: Mendes and his co-star, 20-year-old English actress Ellie Bamber, are very good at playing reckless teenagers in love.
Now for a little thought experiment. Let’s say the video for “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” wasn’t a music video, but a home video. That this wasn’t a singer and an actress, but two aesthetically-pleasing teenagers in love. That Mendes actually was inspired by his love for the red-headed woman beside him to write a song.

That’s the route Shawn Mendes’ fans have taken, completely convinced that Shawn is dating his co-star, Ellie Bamber. I don’t blame the fans. The video is pretty dreamy.
Here’s what you should know about Mendes’ co-star, and rising Julianne Moore, Ellie Bamber.

Her big break came in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals.

In this dark psychological thriller, Bamber played India Hastings, the daughter of Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. We buy the resemblance.

In the film, Bamber’s character is ripped apart from her family and forced through some very traumatic experiences. This intense type of acting got to her.

"I remember coming back to the hotel one night at 5 a.m. after playing a particularly emotional scene in which I'd been crying all night, and back at the hotel I was still crying," Bamber told I-D. "It was so weird."

She was a bit of an acting prodigy.

Sometimes it pays to take your school plays seriously. When Bamber was 11, she was plucked from her middle school play and cast in Sir Trevor Nunn’s production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Aspects of Love.

At 18, she was cast as the lead in the musical High Society at London's famous Old Vic theater.

Surprise: She’s not actually a redhead.

Though Bamber is now recognizable as a redhead, her natural hair color is blonde. Her hair was initially dyed for a role in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and the shade was deepened to match Amy Adams’ hair color in Nocturnal Animals.

“I think I should have been born a redhead,” she told Vogue. “It goes with my personality — I’m fiery and it’s kind of quirky, like me.”

Her grandma still does her hair.

Maintaining Bamber’s hair color requires frequent upkeep. When she’s home in Guildford, England, she visits her grandma, who used to work as a hairdresser.

“She lives a mile down the road,” Bamber told W Magazine, “so she touches up my roots.”

What’s on deck?

It turns out appearing in a Tom Ford movie is a pretty great way to start to a film career.

In 2018, she’ll appear in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, another star-studded movie. In the Lasse Hallstrom-directed epic, a girl finds herself in an enchanted gingerbread world. Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freemen also star.

Later this year, she'll appear in a teen romance movie, Taipei, and a comedy called Extracurricular Activities.
