Hollywood Loves This Low-Maintenance Winter Hairstyle

Your summer glow might be long gone, but that doesn't mean that all of the warm weather looks have to die with it. We went crazy over the wave of adorned box braids and cornrows that popped up on nearly every celebrity we love this summer (especially at festivals like AfroPunk and Coachella). And, good news, cornrows are still going strong for fall and winter, too.

Worn alone or dressed up with beads and decorations, they're the easiest style to rock when you're wanting to make a statement (like Yara Shahidi did at the 2017 American Music Awards) or if y0u're growing out a summer cut (like Taraji P. Henson). Plus, let's not forget that the flat braids are super easy to fit underneath hats – something that's almost impossible if you have a 'fro (trust us, we've tried).

Ahead, see some of the prettiest cold-weather cornrow inspo out there, and get ready to dial your go-to braider ASAP.

Taraji P. Henson made us do somersaults in the office when she debuted her freshly dyed big chop this summer. Now, the Empire star is having fun with protective styles, too, thanks to Chicago braider Perineé Preston. Preston, who goes by PJ, did Henson's hair before a well-deserved Jamaican vacation.

"The back is box braids and the front is cornrows," she says. "They took about six hours because I did them myself." Aside from the look being low-maintenance and a nod to African culture, PJ says that her client opted for the protective style to allow her asymmetrical cut to grow in at the same length all over.

Tracee Ellis Ross' jumbo plaits likely served double duty during her hosting duties at the 2017 American Music Awards. She wore them in a bun during the ceremony, and possibly underneath a wig for the red carpet.

After the AMAs, Yara Shahidi flawlessly recreated Kendrick Lamar's Damn. album cover by changing into a white t-shirt. She already had a variation of his braids (styled by Nai'vasha Johnson).

Felicia Leatherwood looped Issa Rae's side cornrows with a tiny bit of gold wire for a look that simple, but so chic.
