Who she is: A prominent advocate for trans women's rights, Mock is also a New York Times best-selling author, host of MSNBC's weekly culture show So Popular!, and contributing editor at Marie Claire.

What she brings to the table:
As a media-facing writer and TV host, Mock invests time and energy in aesthetics daily and views beauty as one gateway to confidence, identity, and power. She's a brown-skinned girl with natural hair who is always on the hunt for the perfect curly product, red lipstick, and golden highlighting powder.

    Best beauty tip:
"My top secret to voluminous curls? Maintain a light hand when it comes to products. Don't overdo the creams and conditioners — products weigh your curls down. Invest in a volumizing mousse (place on the roots of your crown) and a diffuser (flip your head upside-down and crunch!) to pump up the volume."

We asked Mock to share her top confidence-boosting beauty products. Click through to discover them!

"The perfect buildable foundation powder that's the right size for your handbag or clutch, while also never going on too heavy as you touch up throughout the day. It gives the skin great coverage without over-powdering."

"I rarely leave home without a touch of this under my eyes — and a little dab goes a long way. Nothing has been able to beat Aucoin's signature concealer/foundation in terms of coverage and skin-tone range. This product is my secret to achieving my glowing look."

"This foundation stick has been a staple of my makeup kit since the 10th grade! It's super-affordable and made specifically for brown girls, with great coverage and SPF 15."

"It's the perfect pinky-nude, especially when paired with Cork lipliner! This lipstick never leaves my handbag, and I have tubes all over my apartment."

"Nothing warms up my skin like CoverGirl's Queen Latifah bronzer, which makes my cheekbones pop with a touch of gold shimmer. Plus, it's [so cheap] — can't beat it!"
